Yahoo’s Ridiculous “10 Things Not to Buy in 2010″

// January 11th, 2010 // 3 Comments » // Blog, mistical.com, News

Last week, AnnaMaria Andriotis posted an article at Yahoo Finance on “10 Things Not to Buy in 2010“. In my opinion, she is an absolute moron. Never again should such a person write anything technology related and financial. She should actually be fired from Yahoo, but then ago, probably will be soon anyways seeing how it is Yahoo.

First read the article, linked above, first. Then proceed reading my comments related to this story below.

I do not see DVDs having any problem in sells or store rentals this year. While yes, Blockbuster said they will be closing stores but that is more than likely have to due with competition (Redbox, Netflix, video on-demand, etc) and their prices being expensive. I know many people that still won’t try Netflix, don’t care for it, use Redbox instead and so forth.

Now for compact digital cameras, yea fucking right should you not buy these this year. They are not going anywhere soon. These are much easier to carrier yet alone cheaper to buy than SLR digital cameras. Do you honestly think you are going to see teens or adults wanting to carry around a big camera versus a small compact camera?

To say that external hard drives should not be bought this year and to purchase online backup services is the dumbest thing I have heard. I am not dissing online backup services. I personally do not trust them. Especially when they can disappear at any time without you ever know or announcing they are closing down then having everyone rush to backup their data. Then there is the current economy, most of these places range anywhere from $4.95 and on a month. So you are paying more than $60 a year on these services when you would should not and save more. External hard drives are so cheap today too, even internals, you can pick up 1TB for around $90 to $119. That’s cheap.

This won’t be the year that newspaper subscriptions die even more either, well, at least buy a huge margin that they start shutting down. Nor should you, if you do, stop subscribing. I personally do not subscribe but I will occasionally grab a newspaper and read it. I know people who still do too and I doubt they will be getting rid of it this year or next.

Now everything else I would suggest to not buy though this year, if you choose too. Which includes home telephone service, new college textbooks, cds and gas-guzzling cars. Buying used college textbooks should not even be new to 2010, I know many who have or at least, should have, been doing this for years already.

Well I could say much more on each matter, but I will leave it at that for now. Feel free to comment below and add to this discussion or your opinion.

Goodbye GeoCities

// October 26th, 2009 // No Comments » // Blog, mistical.com, News

Today GeoCities closes forever. Not just closing but being deleted, forever. I remember back in the 90′s when I did something? with GeoCities or maybe that was Angelfire. I cannot remember which but either way, those days are pretty much gone. Surprising people still use such free hosted sites though, some companies do it great while others fail to upgrade and just are stored as wasted space.

GeoCities was started in 1994 then later bought out by Yahoo in 1999. Earlier this year in April, Yahoo announced they would no longer be accepting new registrations and gave users more than enough time to save their content. As well as let users visitors know their site would be closing or moving. If you are interested in reading more about GeoCities closing check out a nice post about it over at LATimes.com or ComputerWorld.com.

Dreamcast, the console that may never die.

// September 9th, 2009 // No Comments » // Blog, Gaming, mistical.com, News

Another new Dreamcast game is going to be released this October. Yes, October 2009. The console that came out in 1998 is still living strong.

The game is Rush Rush Rally Racing and you will be able to buy it from sites like Amazon and eBay for $22 or less. It just amazes me that some old consoles would still even get a game made for it almost 10 years later. I still miss the old days of some of these consoles like Nintendo, Sega and my original GameBoy. It is just near impossible for me to go back to old consoles, I have tried and failed.

Biggest Summer Movies of ’09

// September 3rd, 2009 // No Comments » // Blog, mistical.com, Movies, News, Reviews

This year’s biggest surprise movie according to the list yahoo movies put together was The Hangover. Now this movie could of been so much better than it was, how about actually showing what happened rather than trying to remember? This is where I hope The Hangover 2 picks up from and makes better. Time will tell, I still will see it. Anyways, I saw this movie the night it premiered with my girlfriend Jordan. Like I said, while it could of been better I did really enjoy it and have since seen the movie a lot since then.

Back to it being the “biggest surprise” summer movie of the 2009, it made a total of $270,237,753 in the U.S. alone. Not bad what so ever I would say! The biggest loser of the year was Land of the Lost with $49,438,370. That, I would totally agree with. Will Ferrell needs to start rethinking the roles or movies he makes. The biggest was Transformers 2, now that one is an easy one :) while I have yet to see it, will soon with Jordan in the meantime it made $399,416,040. The new Harry Potter movie made the biggest worldwide though with $895,958,075.

Somehow Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs made it as the biggest international hit with $613,790,529. I am quite surprised by this. While I saw the movie and it was alright, it was not as good as Ice Age 1 or 2 was.

Michael Jackson’s death causes huge spike in AT&T traffic

// June 26th, 2009 // No Comments » // Blog, mistical.com, News

I am sure every other network like T-Mobile, Verizon, etc saw one hell of a huge spike in their network as well for text messages. Yesterday, AT&T reported that at one point that they were reaching 4 million text messages per minute, more than 60 percent above normal values.

It is their largest in history on their network since the 9/11 attacks. Nearly 65,000 text messages were being sent per a second. The voice call rate was about 10 percent above normal.

The news of Michael Jackson’s death also brought down popular websites such as Google News. It also caused interruptions with Twitter. Rest In Peace Michael Jackson.

T-Mobile Releases 2 New Apps in Android Market

// June 24th, 2009 // No Comments » // Android, Blog, mistical.com, News

G1screen0005T-Mobile has released 2 new apps into the Android Market. The first one is Mobile Backup. This sync’s or backups your contacts with T-Mobile’s server.

That way if you lose your phone, you still have your contact with T-Mobile. This could be quite useful in case you ever get rid of the G1 for another phone where you would not be able to connect and sync your contacts with Google.

G1screen0006The other application released by T-Mobile is called HotSpot.

Now if I remember correctly there already was another app like this in the Market. Now you officially have one by T-Mobile is all. This app will find you T-Mobile WiFi HotSpot locations.

If you do not already have the app My Account by T-Mobile, then grab it already. They released months ago and it lets you check your minutes used, text messages used, bill summary, phone storage information and much more.

Pixar grants girl’s dying wish to see ‘Up’

// June 19th, 2009 // No Comments » // Blog, mistical.com, News

Pixar granted Colby Curtin her dying wish to see the movie ‘Up’. The company flew an employee with a DVD of Up, which is only in theaters, to the Curtins’ Huntington Beach home on June 10 for a private viewing of the movie. Colby died about seven hours after seeing the film.

It is good to know that good people still exist out there and even more so from companies like Pixar. More companies should take notice and get more into dying wishes. I know some do but it needs to be done more. It honestly can not really hurt them much what so ever. Seeing how it is a dying wish for someone especially when it is not there fault and a victim of cancer, a rare one at that.

This is a very sad story and to end it, Rest in Peace Colby Curtin. I am glad you got to see Up, that your wish was granted and enjoyed a great movie as I saw it with my girlfriend Jordan and thought it was.

I am very impressed with this update (that finally has arrived). I have seen my share of videos of the updates but after having used it, it feels so much better than what I was expecting which was good already. The on-screen keyboard is nice, it takes some getting used too. Some larger fingers can have a harder time getting use to. I think I will just be using the on-screen keyboard for quick writing and not long text messages or anything. The user interface updates are even more beautiful.
